Polyphenols extraction kinetics from Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed employing water and saltwater: Effect of ultrasound sonication

نویسندگان

چکیده

Saltwater (S), with the same ionic strength of seawater, was employed as solvent to extract polyphenols from seaweeds. Aqueous extracts were chemically characterized by means total (TPC), carbohydrates (CHOS) and uronic acids (UA) content antioxidant capacities (DPPH, ABTS FRAP). S-extracts showed lower TPC than those obtained distilled water (D) using two different extraction methods, conventional solid-liquid (SLE) ultrasound-assisted (UAE). The both non-sonicated did not show significant (p < 0.05) differences. SLE kinetics employing solvents (D S) successfully modelled Peleg's model, equilibria achieved after 15 min. Long-time UAE (15 min) increased phytochemical in D- respect SLE. Extracts three main (A, B, C) regions RP-HPLC profiles peak areas shapes. Normalized related activities linear regressions that B-region responsible features extracts. saltwater promoted leaching other compounds (mainly proteins) formed intermolecular complexes. These interactions notoriously diminished UAE. At these conditions, can be eco-friendly according green chemistry principles.

Laminarin from Irish Brown Seaweeds Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminaria hyperborea: Ultrasound Assisted Extraction, Characterization and Bioactivity

Ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE), purification, characterization and antioxidant activity of laminarin from Irish brown seaweeds Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminarina hyperborea were investigated. UAE was carried out using 60% ultrasonic power amplitude and 0.1 M hydrochloric acid for 15 min. Separately, solid-liquid extraction was carried in an orbital shaker using 0.1 M hydrochloric acid at ...

Effect of foliar application of seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum extract on morpho-physiological characteristics of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) under water stress

Seaweed extract can improve the physicochemical properties of the soil and has a favorable effect on the plant growth and development due to having high nutrient content, high water holding capacity, plant growth regulators and beneficial microorganisms. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of Ascophyllum nodosum extract, a brown alga, on the morphophysiological characterist...

Thermal imaging of soybean response to drought stress: the effect of Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed extract

Previous experiments have demonstrated positive effect of Acadian(®) extract of Ascophyllum nodosum on plant stress-resistance, however the mode of action is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to understand the physiological effect of Acadian(®) seaweed extract on the plant response to drought stress. Leaf temperature and leaf angle were measured as early-stage indicators of plant ...

Antidiabetic properties of polysaccharide- and polyphenolic-enriched fractions from the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum.

We screened seaweed species from Atlantic Canada for antidiabetic activity by testing extracts for alpha-glucosidase inhibitory effect and glucose uptake stimulatory activity. An aqueous ethanolic extract of Ascophyllum nodosum was found to be active in both assays, inhibiting rat intestinal alpha-glucosidase (IC50 = 77 microg/mL) and stimulating basal glucose uptake into 3T3-L1 adipocytes duri...

Sensitivity of Escherichia coli to Seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) Phlorotannins and Terrestrial Tannins

Pure culture experiments were conducted to assess the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of phlorotannins (PT) isolated from Ascophyllum nodosum (brown seaweed) on Escherichia coli O157:H7. In Exp. 1, one non-O157:H7 strain (25922) and three strains of E. coli O157:H7 (3081, EDL933 and E318N) were cultured in M9 medium with PT included at 0 (control), 25, 50 or 100 μg/ml (n = 3). Bacterial...
